What is radiofrequency (RF) microneedling?

Do you have fine lines, acne scars, or sun damage? Would you like your skin to look its best? RF microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that uses heat to stimulate collagen and elastin production for skin rejuvenation and resurfacing. RF microneedling uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface before delivering RF energy to resurface and tighten the skin.

Our office uses the state-of-the-art Vivace® and Darwin® devices to rejuvenate your skin with RF microneedling. The micro-injuries created stimulate the body’s healing mechanism to produce collagen and elastin— the proteins responsible for firm and youthful skin. At the same time, RF energy is delivered through the needles into the skin’s deeper layers. This energy generates heat, which further stimulates collagen and elastin production.

This dual action of RF microneedling devices delivers impressive results for the following skin issues.

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Acne scarring
  • Loose or saggy skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Photodamage
  • Stretchmarks

What can I expect from the procedure?

The doctor will instruct you on preparing before your treatment to enjoy the safest, most optimal outcomes. Generally, avoid alcohol and any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for a week. These substances increase the risk of bruising and bleeding after the procedure. Furthermore, avoid skin products that contain salicylic acid and protect your face from direct sun exposure for about two weeks.

Patients experience minimal pain during treatment. The doctor applies a numbing cream to the treatment areas 30-45 minutes before the procedure. The Vivace® and Darwin® treatments were designed with the patient’s comfort in mind.

The treatment itself takes 45-60 minutes, depending on the location and what you are treating. Many patients need 3-4 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve optimal outcomes.

What should I expect after the procedure?

You’ll expect mild redness and swelling in the treatment areas. These side effects last 24-48 hours and aren’t significant enough to disrupt your everyday activities. Our team will advise using a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water to clean your face. Don’t apply makeup for 24 hours, wear sunscreen, and avoid sun exposure as you heal.

How long does it take to see the results?

The results for RF microneedling aren’t instant because the body needs 6-8 weeks time to produce collagen and elastin. You may see some results following the third treatment, but the skin usually reaches peak rejuvenation over six months. The outcomes can last 12-18 months or longer with a proper skin care regimen.

What type of skin does RF microneedling work on?

Unlike some laser treatments, RF microneedling is safe and effective for all skin tones and types, including tanned and dark skin. This gives RF microneedling a significant advantage over other non-surgical skin and laser treatments.
