Have you heard of electrolysis? If you are considering laser hair removal, you should know that electrolysis is also an option if you are not a candidate for laser hair removal. Electrolysis is safe, effective and works on all hair colors and all skin types. With the help of electrolysis, you can remove your unwanted hair. What Is Electrolysis and How Does It Work?

During the permanent hair removal process known as electrolysis, a tiny probe introduces an electrical current straight into the base of the hair follicle. This current destroys the follicle, preventing it from producing new hair. Electrolysis is effective on all skin tones and hair colors, unlike other hair removal techniques like lasers. This treatment is used on all parts of the body such the face, arms, legs, underarms and bikini line. Electrolysis is most effective during the active growth phase of a hair follicle.  Because our hair follicles are all in different growth phases, multiple sessions are needed for permanent hair reduction.

How Many Electrolysis Sessions Will I Need?

The thickness of the hair, the treatment area, and the person’s hair growth cycle all affect how many electrolysis treatments are required. Since hair grows in cycles and electrolysis targets only follicles in the active growth phase, several sessions are necessary to achieve optimal results. Most patients need between 12 to 30 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart over several months. Your hair type and the size of the treated area will determine how many treatments you need. Your dermatologist or licensed electrologist will create a personalized treatment plan based on your needs.

Is Electrolysis Painful?

Although everyone has a different threshold for pain, most people feel some minor discomfort when undergoing electrolysis. When the electrical current is administered to the hair follicle, the sensation is frequently characterized as a momentary stinging or tingling sensation. Some areas, such as the upper lip or bikini line, may be more sensitive. Applying numbing cream before treatment can reduce discomfort, and your electrologist can adjust the intensity of the current to enhance comfort during the procedure. Any discomfort is usually temporary and resolves quickly after each session.

Are There Any Side Effects or Risks with Electrolysis?

While electrolysis is a safe, FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, it carries potential risks and side effects like any cosmetic procedure. Temporary reactions such as redness, swelling, and mild discomfort around the treated area are the most common. Usually, these symptoms go away in a few hours or the following day. After the operation, some individuals could also experience little bumps or a stinging sensation. However, these side effects are usually temporary.

Depending on your skin type, electrolysis may cause more noticeable side effects, such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (darkening or lightening of the skin) in the treated area. These changes in skin color are typically temporary and fade over time, especially with proper post-treatment care.

Are Multiple Appointments Needed?

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal option. For an effective treatment, you will need to have multiple follow-up treatments. Our electrologist can talk to you about the number of appointments you will need for the best results. Larger amounts of hair or larger areas of the body require more time and a greater number of appointments. Once all of the hair is removed, you will no longer need follow-up appointments or any type of maintenance.
